Students should begin enrollment process ASAP
The officers and directors of the Greene County Area EMS Association are sponsoring the first ever hybrid EMT class to be offered in the west central Iowa area. Many persons from Greene and surrounding counties have indicated an interest in this class.
A hybrid EMT class is one in which the lecture portions of the class are presented over the internet. The lecture portion of the class will be held on Monday nights from 6 to 10 pm beginning June 2 with an end date of Sept. 22.
If they wish, students can take the class from the comfort of their home without the need to travel for classes. Utilizing a program such as Adobe Connect on their computers, students receive the lectures from Des Moines-based Mercy College of Health Science instructors. Students can interact with the instructors and ask questions, etc. Additionally, each lecture session is recorded and students can review each class as desired. Instructors maintain “internet office hours” and students can interact with them as needed.
Six “live” Saturday “skills days” are also included in the class. These classes will be held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on June 14 and 28, July 12, August 2 and 23, and Sept. 13. On these Saturdays, the students will meet with Mercy instructors to learn the skills and critical thinking skills that are necessary to become a practicing EMT. It is anticipated that students will be enrolled in this class from multiple locations. A central location will be utilized for the Saturday classes.
Students participating in this class will also complete clinical and field rotations with area hospitals and ambulance services. National Registry Practical Skills testing will take place at Mercy in Des Moines on Sept. 27.
Cost of this course is estimated to be approximately $1,000.
